The EFL confirmed the start date for leagues one, two and the championship on Friday.

The regular EFL season is scheduled to conclude on May 8 and 9, with the play-offs to follow and the finals played by the end of that month.

Work is currently underway in respect of full fixture scheduling and details will be announced in due course as to when the fixture lists for 2020/21 will be made available.

The Premier League will start on the same weekend as the EFL, but there was no news on whether or not the league season would be preceded by the first round of the Carabao Cup being played on September 5

The announcement means that the new season will start with games being played behind closed doors, but it is hoped that spectators could be set to return to venues on a socially-distanced basis from October 1.

Posh, whose players returned to pre-season training this week, haven't played since their 2-0 win over Portsmouth back on March 7, with the campaign being curtailed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
