Peterborough United striker was emotional and grateful after claiming the first EFL goal of his career
All of a sudden, the sacrifices and rejections all seem worth it for Peterborough United striker Pemi Aderoju.
The 21 year-old, who spent the first half of the current season scoring goals for fun in the National League South for Eastbourne, claimed the first EFL goal of his career as Posh thumped Wigan Athletic 6-1 at the Weston Homes Stadium on Saturday.
Aderoju has long been championed by chairman Darragh MacAnthony, while first-team boss Luke Williams quickly became a fan after assuming control at Posh late in October. MacAnthony has revealed Aderoju will sign a new Posh contract soon.
The powerfully built forward was sent on against Wigan at 4-1 and claimed the fifth goal five minutes time with a cool finish after a strong run forward by fellow substitute Brandon Khela.

"It feels like it was a long time coming, but I am delighted to finally get on the scoresheet,” Aderoju told the Posh Plus service. “As soon as Brandon got the ball I tried to spin out in order to leave him the space to play me through. He did it and I saw the defender coming across and tried to put him off balance before putting the shot into the corner.
"It was an amazing feeling. I was overcome with emotion to be able to celebrate with my teammates in front of our fans. I thank God because people only really see the good stuff that happens, they don’t see the hard work, the sacrifices and rejections that happen behind the scenes.
“When I’m not starting games I like to study what is going on to give myself the best chance to make an impact. I want to be locked in and focused for when I get my chance. The game had become very transitional before I went on so there were gaps for me to exploit.
"I can also learn so much from Harry Leonard and his attributes. He’s a really smart player and it also boosts the confidence to be shown so much faith just to be sent on in important games.”
Posh moved up two places to 10th ahead of a League One fixture at 12th placed Mansfield Town on Tuesday (February 10, 7.45pm kick off).
