Szmodics played virtually the entire 90 minutes of last Saturday’s (March 7) 2-0 win over Portsmouth at the Weston Homes Stadium without a problem.

The 24 year-old also trained well on Monday, but on Tuesday before training he felt a niggle in his hamstring as he was putting his socks on.

Szmodics will definitely miss Saturday’s game at Bolton (March 14) and a home game with Bristol Rovers on March 21.

Posh boss Darren Ferguson said: “It’s a strange one. Sammie played well on Saturday and trained hard on Monday, but on Tuesday he was pulling his socks up and felt a niggle. A scan has confirmed there is a problem.

“He will miss the next two matches at least.”

Defender Nathan Thompson has been pencilled in for a return to action from a thigh problem at Coventry City on Saturday, April 4, while centre-back Frankie Kent is due back to face Rovers.

Szmodics has scored four goals in 14 appearances for Posh since joining on loan from Bristol City in January.
