The Peterborough Telegraph understands ‘The Hornets’ have been monitoring Toney since the turn of the year.
And Posh can expect an offer from the top-flight side even if they lose their ongoing battle against relegation to the Championship.
A source, who wished to remain anonymous, told the PT. “Toney has been on Watford’s radar throughout 2020 and they like what they have seen.
“If they go down they will have £40 million in parachute payments and they would expect Toney to go well at Championship level.”
Posh are believed to want around £10 million for a 24 year-old who scored 26 goals in a shortened 2019-20 League One campaign.
Championship promotion contenders Brentford, Leeds and Fulham have also been linked with Toney, while interest has also arrived from overseas in the shape of MSL side New York Bulls and Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig.
Scottish giants Celtic and Rangers have also been linked with Toney.
Posh turned down a £4 million bid from New York earlier this month.
Here is a rundown of the clubs chasing Toney with the odds on the move happening...

LEEDS: If ever a top-quality side needed someone to finish off all their terrific approach work it’s the Championship title favourites. Leeds have worked wonders to be in such a dominant position having been lumbered with Patrick Bamford (pictured) up front all season. Toney would be a serious upgrade on him because he would offer so much more in open play as well as more goals. Like Fulham though, Leeds would probably look elsewhere if they win promotion and they would presumably be able to afford to. Swanny’s odds: 8/1 Photo : Mike Egerton/PA Wire.

NEW YORK RED BULLS: The Major Soccer League club were the first to make a bid this summer, but their offer of £4 million was swiftly rejected. It's unsure whether or not they will be back, but surely a player of Toney's age and with his ability wouldn't go to a relatively minor league? Stadium, overall facilities and a fabulous city are all strong attractions though. Swanny's Odds: 10/1.
7.
RANGERS: There’s plenty of pretty ordinary English talent in Steven Gerrard’s squad and yet they still finished in a comfortable second place in the Scottish Premier League. Rangers don’t have Celtic’s spending power, but that makes them far more likely to take a punt on Toney. Toney would tear up Scottish football and he certainly wouldn’t be intimidated physically or in terms of ability when those all-important Glasgow derbies arrive. Toney could do better (any Championship club for a start), but that’s not to say a move to Ibrox won’t happen. Swanny’s odds: 5/2. Photo: Jeff Holmes. PA Wire.

RB LEIPZIG: The top four Bundesliga club have been known to try their luck with young English talent, but they tend to be younger than Toney, like Ademola Lookman (pictured). As good as Toney is, this would be step too far. Swanny's Odds: 25/1. PhotoL Adam Davy PA wire.
