Peterborough United skipper on bizarre penalty incident, big characters and always being ready for action

Peterborough United skipper Carl Johnston has spoken to Posh Plus about the bizarre penalty incident in the Boxing Day win over Leyton Orient, what he told Luke Williams when the new boss arrived at the Weston Homes Stadium and the biggest voices in the dressing room.

After the last gasp 1-0 win over Leyton Orient, Johnston said: “The main thing was winning this game. The clean sheet was a bonus. The performance could have been better, but we now have something else to build on.

"We probably just about deserved it. We weren’t at our best in possession or in terms of creating chances. If we could have put our foot down we could have won by a couple of goals.

"As for the penalty decision, from my angle I thought it was a penalty, but as soon as the referee went over to the assistant I thought it would get overturned, and rightly so, but we got there in the end.

"When the gaffer arrived I told him I could do a job on both sides of the defence, but I'm just happy to be playing now as I’ve missed it because it had been a while. I’m now buzzing after being part of two wins and obviously I would play anywhere and I would always put on a shift.

“We have some big voices in our team which is important as it can’t always be the same voice. Tom Lees is a big character in the dressing room who has a lot to say. He’s had a fantastic career and we can all learn from him.

“It’s quite tough going on in a game, especially in the first-half. I was munching a banana when I got the call at Port Vale last week. The first-half shout to go on is always a weird one. You have to be ready though and I always make sure I am. I watch the game carefully so I know what’s going on.

"We need to get ready to play Reading now. I don’t mind playing against the same opposition twice in quick succession as you sort of know what to expect. I watched the first game at Reading and the lads did a good number on them so hopefully we can get a repeat performance and win.”

Posh host Reading at the Weston Homes Stadium on Monday (December 29, 7.45pm kick off). Posh won 2-1 at Reading on December 9 with goals from Jimmy-Jay Morgan and Harry Leonard.
