Peterborough United scored four goals and hit the woodwork nine times in a Women's FA Cup success

Peterborough United beat Wallsend BC 4-0 in the second round of the Women’s FA Cup at PIMS Park on Sunday.

But the scoreline didn’t tell the full story of a remarkable contest in which the visiting goalkeeper made a string of outstanding saves with Posh also hitting the woodwork an amazing nine times!

Substitute Renai Bennett scored twice with Jess Rousseau and Edyn Osker also on target as Posh booked a tough third round tie at full-time club Burnley on Sunday, December 14. Unbeaten Burnley have won nine of their 11 games to sit on top of the National Northern Premier Division, which is a level above Posh.

Kira Rai was the first to hit the woodwork on six minutes and within the same move Niamh Reynolds repeated the trick before Keir Perkins' shot was diverted onto the post on 15 minutes.

Kayleigh Hines hit the woodwork on 24 minutes before Rai was kept out by the keeper. Rousseau twice went close before Reynolds hit the frame of the goal for the second time.

Perkins had the ball in the back of the net from the rebound, but from an offside position. Rousseau was denied by the keeper on 37 minutes before the deadlock was finally broken as Rousseau fired home from close-range after Perkins' effort was parried by the goalkeeper.

Just before the hour mark, the woodwork was back in the action, this time it was Bennett who saw her effort from the edge of the box clip the top of the bar. Osker was denied by the goalkeeper once more before Bennett guided the ball over the goal-line from a corner kick to double the advantage.

Tara Kirk, making her first appearance of the season after injury, was denied by a fine block before being kept out by the goalkeeper. Rebecca Mears then saw an effort clip the woodwork.

As the game moved into added time, Bennett grabbed got her second of the game as she poked the ball past the goalkeeper before Osker completed the scoring with a close-range header from an Emily Meli cross.

Posh goalkeeper Neive Corry kept a clean sheet on her 100th appearance for the club.

Posh: Corry, Osker, Sharpe, Clarke (sub Cragg 80 mins), Lawlor, Hines, Rai (sub Meli 59 mins), Perkins, Reynolds (sub Mears 59 mins), Rousseau (sub Kirk 75 mins), Brown (sub Bennett 60 mins). Unused subs: Driscoll-King, Pitt.

Posh had their lead at the top of National Midlands Division One trimmed to a point on Sunday as second-placed Boldmere St Michaels won 2-1 at third-placed Leafield Athletic. Posh have a game in hand on their nearest rivals and host ninth-placed Kidderminster Harriers at PIMS Park next Sunday (December 7).
