Peterborough United 's need for three more signings is obvious - in fact I believe they need four

Peterborough United are on the hunt for a replacement for midfielder Archie Collins, a right winger and a forward player.

All are necessary, in fact I would suggest Posh need a number 10 as well as a striker to back-up Harry Leonard, if a League One promotion push is to become a possibility. The number 10 is needed unless Posh complete a U turn and keep Matty Garbett (yes please!) otherwise 17 year-old Pat Sykut is currently the only option to fill a Jimmy-Jay Morgan-sized hole.

The current squad of those realistically expected to challenge for a first-team place, is listed below. Transfer listed players have obviously been excluded.

It should be noted new signing Evan Weir can play centre back or left-back. Defenders Rio Adebisi and Sam Hughes are returning from long-term injuries. The arrival of Owura Edwards, an athlete in great shape according to club sports scientist Lewis Keeble, means Posh have two left-wingers, but only teenager Bolu Shofowoke to play on the right flank.

Current Posh squad

Goalkeepers: Alex Bass, Collin Adeng-Ndi

Right-backs: Carl Johnston, James Dornelly.

Left-backs: Evan Weir, Harley Mills, Rio Adebisi,

Centre-backs: Sam Hughes, Tom O’Connor, David Okagbue.

MIdfielders: Harrison Jones, Brandon Khela, Ben Woods, Matty Garbett.

Number 10: Pat Sykut.

Wingers: Bolu Shofowoke, Kyrell Lisbie, Owura Edwards.

Forwards: Harry Leonard, David Kamara, Pemi Aderoju.

There are 21 players here, which could reduce if players are sent out on loan. That could happen to Pemi Aderoju.

Posh boss Luke Williams is on the record as saying his favoured playing formation is 3-4-3, one he used successfully at Notts County, but I’m not sure the players to make that work are yet here.

The best I can do is….

Bass

Johnston, O’Connor, Weir

Dornelly, Khela, Woods, Mills

Shofowoke, Leonard, Lisbie

More likely Posh will stick with a 4-2-3-1 system, or a similar version of it.

Something like this…

Bass

Johnston, Hughes, O’Connor, Weir

Khela, Jones.

Shofowoke, Garbett, Lisbie

Leonard.

Neither line-up screams ‘promotion push’ to me so let’s hope Posh are far advanced in their attempts to recruit the three new players.

Later today I’ll list three players for each problem position with the help of Posh fans on social media site X.
