A win for Posh against neighbours fighting hard against relegation would move them eight points clear of the Wearsiders who have a tough game at bang in-form Blackpool tomorrow (April 17, 12.30pm). Sunderland are also away at League One leaders Hull City on Tuesday when Posh host Gillingham (April 20, 7,45pm).

“I wasn’t thinking about the chance to put pressure on anyone else when we moved the game to Friday night,” Ferguson admitted. “I didn’t know when anyone else was playing when we made our decision.

“I was more concerned with getting extra rest before we play Gillingham and they don’t now play until 5.30pm tomorrow so we will almost have an extra day’s rest on them before we play them.

“But of course our focus is entirely on Northampton for now and we are approaching the game in great form.

“We look solid and compact defensively as one goal conceded in four matches would suggest, and that was from a very good free-kick.

“The players are all fit apart from (goalkeeper) Christy Pym and they look like they are in a good place.

“They know the prize waiting for them them if they can keep their standards high for six more matches.”

Posh need a maximum of 14 points from six matches to seal promotion to the Championship and that’s assuming Sunderland win their remaining six games.
