Toney will complete his move to the Bees tomorrow (September 1) in a deal which will eventually be worth £10 million to Posh.

And Ferguson believes Toney has gone to the perfect club. The 24 year-old striker scored 26 goals in a shortened 2019-20 season to claim the League One player of the prize and the Golden Boot award for the third tier’s leading scorer.

“There’s no doubt Ivan is ready for the step up,” Ferguson stated. “We did hope he would get us up before he left us, but it was hardly his fault it didn’t happen. He couldn’t have done any more for the club last season.

“I’m delighted for him and I wish him well. This move has been in the pipeline for a long time. Everyone knows Brentford tried hard to get Ivan in January and they have been very persistent.

“And that’s good news for Ivan as it suggests they will play him and I’d expect him to do very well. The manager has done very well there so he will be staying which is good for Ivan and the style of play at Brentford will suit him down to the ground.

“They have good players who create a lot of chances. They are also a progressive club moving to new stadium so it could be the right time to join them.

“I am sure he will thrive.”

Posh have replaced Toney with Jonson Clarke-Harris from Bristol Rovers.
