Posh director of football Bary Fry revealed Posh had a bid of £400k for the midfielder accepted by Dale last summer, but the player turned the move down.

Fry wouldn’t be drawn on whether or not Posh would go back in for Camps who has expressed a desire to play in the Championship.

Fry said: “We bid £400k for Camps last summer, but he told us he wanted to play in the Championship,” Fry revealed.

“That’s still the case as far as I’m aware, but there will be a lot of players battling for very few positions this summer.

“Our manager has identified players he thinks will help us win promotion next season, but those names are under wraps for now.

“We can’t sign anyone anyway as the transfer window isn’t open for us and we don’t know when it will be.

“It’s a ridiculous situation. As things stand we could sell Ivan Toney abroad today, but we wouldn’t be allowed to replace him.”

Camps (24) is closing in on 250 appearances for Rochdale, his only professional club, scoring 30 goals, and is believed to be of interest to several Championship clubs.

Dale released all their out-of-contract players earlier this month including veteran strikers Aaron Wilbraham and Ian Henderson.
