Boyd returned to Posh last season after a strong career in the Premier League and Championship with Burnley, Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday, but he failed to reach the glittering heights of his first spell at London Road which included three promotion wins.

Boyd (34) started 19 games last season and played in a few different midfield positions without scoring a goal.

Fellow midfielders George Cooper, Louis Reed and Jason Naismith have also been placed on the transfer list.

Cooper spent last season on loan at Plymouth Argyle in League Two, while Reed did not make a single appearance for Posh after the 1-0 League One defeat at AFC Wimbledon on January 18.

Naismith spent last season in the Scottish Premier League with Hibs, but is currently recovering from a serious knee injury.

Posh must keep a tight grip on their squad size this season because of new salary cap regulations. Boyd, who signed a two-year contract last summer, still has a year to run and is likely to be among the highest earners at Posh after returning on a free transfer.
