Peterborough United have identified possible replacements for Siriki Dembele should the 24 year-old get his wish and leave London Road during the January transfer window.

Posh boss Darren Ferguson appeared to confirm this today (January 7) when suggesting his club ‘were ahead of the game’ should the need to replace a dashing attacking player arise.

The Peterborough Telegraph understands provisional offers have already been made for a couple of strikers.

Dembele handed in a transfer request earlier this week, but is expected to be part of Saturday’s matchday squad for the trip to League One leaders Lincoln City (January 9, 12.30pm).

Ferguson said: “I don’t think there will be a lot of transfers done in League One during this window apart from loans, but I believe there will be a Premier League club or Championship club capable of matching our asking price for Siriki.

“What that fee is, is not down to me, but someone might come and get him.

“If that happens we will replace him and we are ahead of the game in that respect.

“If Siriki stays that’s good also and we won’t be recruiting anyone. We built a squad in the summer to last the season and I have every confidence it is good enough to get where we want to be.

“One way for Siriki to improve his chances of a move is to train well enough to get into the side and then to play well enough to stay in it.

“If he shows the right attitude and respects the rest of the players I will have no problem in selecting him.”

*Posh have brought forward the kick off time for their League One home game with Bristol Rovers on Tuesday, January 26 to 7pm.
