Peterborough United fans worried more about the poor performance than the bad result against League Two opposition, although some are already fretting over Ivan Toney’s departure

Peterborough United fans didn’t seem overly concerned about falling at first round stage of the Carabao Cup for the fourth season in a row yesterday (September 5).

There was some concern though about the performance in the 1-0 home defeat by League Two side Cheltenham Town, the departure of Ivan Toney, the non-arrival of Sammie Szmodics, the sloppy Posh passing, the tactics and the tempo!

Comments were made to @PTAlanSwann on Twitter.

The fact I can’t pick a man-of-the-match sums up our afternoon, but not going to worry after our first competitive game in six months and players’ first game behind closed doors. Glad to have one less fixture to distract our league campaign.

Lacked tempo & purpose on ball. No thrust out wide. Over-reliant on Dembele to make something happen. Out of possession, especially in the first half, intensity was actually pretty good. Taylor surprisingly sloppy. Eisa’s movement sharp/Broom had moments which are positives. Pym/Dembele man of the match.

@ReportPosh

Cheltenham did a job on us. Disappointed to see Broom go off when he did. We need to stop the long ball up to Ivan Toney as he is not here. Not too worried and could be a blessing to go out. Man-of-the-match - the Cheltenham ‘keeper.

@BryanWoodend.

Man of the match in a dour old game was Christy Pym. Kept us in it for longer than we deserved to be.

@Rutlandspinner

Note to Fergie: Constantly pumping long punted diagonal balls into both channels to Ivan Toney might not work as well this season. Very uninspiring, Cheltenham were easily the better side. Posh passing was poor throughout and we looked way off it. Man-of-the-match Pym for keeping it to one.

Never understood professional footballers hoofing the ball up front to players who last won a header at under 12 level.

@footydaz

Picth looked nice

@Poshtroll

Didn’t watch, glad we’re out of a competition that shouldn’t even be happening this season.

@Trev112

Result doesn’t matter, performance lethargic, Dembele man of the match

@BrianSwann1

Thought Dembele was good, but poor all round performance. Need Szmodics back!

@Alexnelson2004

Boring, slow, uninteresting. Man of the match Dembele.

Well, sounds like I saved a tenner. Long way to go though, although I do feel the team isn’t as strong as last year’s. And using wingbacks we’ll lose more points than we need to.

@andymartin1175

Didn’t watch, but not disappointed to be out of a cup. Focus needs to be on the league.

@myallup

Where was the wide up tempo play from last season? We appeared to be back to pre-Christmas levels of passing around the back and middle without any penetration up front. Man-of-the-Match Dembele.

@poshcricketer

Bring in Szmodics and should 100% have kept George Cooper for creativity.

@BenBeebypufc

Season hasn’t started yet and we’ve been written off by some, shocking.
