Peterborough United fans have their fingers crossed as spectators set to return to ‘low-risk’ venues after lockdown

Peterborough United fans could return to the Weston Homes Stadium as early as December 8, after UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson gave the green light during a House of Commons discussion today (November 23).

Mr Johnson will to permit up to 4,000 fans to watch live sport in the areas showing low coronavirus cases.

A new three tier system is due to take effect from the end of lockdown on December 2. Tier one is the lowest risk with tier three the highest.

Peterborough was rated a tier one city when lockdown started on November 5, but it’s understood the infection rate in the area has increased since then.

Venues in tier one would be allowed 4,000 fans (or 50% of capacity if lower) with venues in tier two allowed 2,000 fans (or 50% of capacity if lower). Posh have around 3,500 season tickets for the 2020-21 season and a capacity of just under 15,000 at the Weston Homes Stadium.

The first Posh home game after lockdown is a Papa John’s Trophy contest against West Ham United Under 21s which is scheduled for Tuesday, December 8 (6pm). Other Posh home games scheduled for December are Rochdale (December 12), Ipswich (December 19) and Charlton (December 29).

Posh are at Portsmouth for a League One game on Saturday December 5. Portsmouth were also a tier one city at the start of lockdown, but infection rates are believed to have been rising there as well.

MPs will vote on the Prime Minister’s recommendations later this week with the official tier ratings for each area to be announced on Thursday.
