Football is currently shut down due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis, with the EFL and Premier League suspended until the end of April at the earliest.

There has been talk in some quarters that the season should be voided, as has happened in non-league, but Thompson is totally against such a move.

As it stands, Posh sit sixth in league one, just three points off automatic promotion.

Thompson is well aware where football sits in the greater scheme of things, but he still feels the season should be played to a conclusion, whenever it is safe to do so.

“I think it is essential,” he said. “You work all year, from pre-season all the way through, and at times it is tough.

"You look back at the sort of run we went through at Christmas, and it is difficult, but as a team we ground it out and we have put ourselves in a position now where we are in real contention for promotion.

“That is something that doesn’t come about all too often. I have been in the game for probably 12 years now as a pro, and promotions and being involved in the run-in at this stage of the season aren’t two-a-penny.

“We are in a good position and it is frustrating, but we are desperate to finish the season and see where it can take us.

“For me, with the squad we have at this moment, these are exciting times and you certainly don’t want to finish that the way it is now.”
