Posh sold the free-scoring striker to the Championship side in a deal worth £10 million last August.

Posh are guaranteed most of that fee regardless of the progress made by Toney and Brentford, but considerable add-ons were negotiated by co-owner Darragh MacAnthony and director of football Barry Fry.

And because of Toney’s free-scoring form in the second tier the first extra chunks could be due at the end of the current campaign.

The Peterborough Telegraph understands Posh are due £1 million for every promotion Brentford win over the five years of Toney’s current contract.

Further payments are due based on Toney’s goalscoring record and if the 24 year-old is sold Posh will receive a percentage of any profit made by Brentford.

Brentford moved top of the Championship last night (February 10) after a 3-1 win at Reading when Toney took his goals tally to a remarkable 23 in just 28 matches,

Toney is already being touted for a move up to the Premier League should Brentford miss out this season. His valuation would have multiplied many times over already this season.

Extra cash would be welcomed by Posh who have relied on the largesse of their three owners, Darragh MacAnthony, Dr Jason Neale and Stewart Thompson, during the current pandemic.

MacAnthony revealed during the latest podcast that the ownership ‘have stood up millions’ this season.

“All the true debt the club has is to the owners,” MacAnthony revealed. “But we also have playing assets worth millions.”

Posh will comment on the possible removal of the salary cap rules after an EFL meeting today (Thursday).
