Peterborough United chief teases fans over possible Szmodics return amid interest from Sunderland

Peterborough United co-owner Darragh MacAnthony has refused to rule out a shock return to the club for attacking midfielder Sammie Szmodics.

The arrival of Ryan Broom from Chelteham Town on a three-year deal this week seemed to signal the end of Posh interest in a player who excelled on loan at the Weston Homes Stadium last season.

But when MacAnthony was asked whether or not interest in Szmodics had indeed cooled, he replied: “Assume nothing. This signing (Broom) is to give us strength in an area which will be depleted come the start of season.”

Szmodics reportedly wants to try and break into the Bristol City first team under new manager Dean Holden, the ex-Posh player. The 24 year-old has also been linked with League One title favourites Sunderland.

MacAnthony also claimed that Posh were after two number 10s this summer, one of whom was Broom. The club left a spare place in its squad list for the 2020-21 season which was published today.

MacAnthony said: “We have strategically left room for another player. A whole new world now with salary cap sensible planning.”
