Peterborough United chairman’s podcast claims leading League One club leaked shock report on EFL plans to void the 2019-20 season

The shock report published on Friday (May 8) suggesting League One and League Two clubs would vote to declare the 2019-20 season null and void early next week was leaked by a leading third tier club, according to Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony’s ‘Hard Truth’ podcast.

The report on ‘The Athletic’ website declared promotion places were likely to be awarded based on a weighted ‘points-per-game’ formula, one that would leave Posh stranded in fifth place as current top three Coventry City, Rotherham United and Oxford United would all go up.

MacAnthony was irritated enough to issue a threat of legal action should that course of action take placeand he interrupted his weekly podcast that night to say Fleetwood Town chairman Andy Pilley had just messaged him claiming ‘one of the three League One clubs set to win promotion had leaked the report in an attempt to manufacture the result of any vote’.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to make a statement on lockdown tonight (May 10, 7pm) with the Premier League and EFL expected to confirm their plans within the next few days.

Yesterday MacAnthony tweeted: “If PM & Sports Minister tell us all there is a way to get football back & PL & EFL can put a plan together for us all how to get it done then we should do our best to finish (the season).

“If PL and Championship get their games back on then L1 & L2 need to do the same. Apologies if that upsets people, but it’s the right thing to do. My press officer this morning has had four players from L1/L2 on asking for me to call their owners as they concerned their owners are not making enough noise about getting their season finished & so many players want to get back & play.

“Just received text from a manager in top 3 of L1 that says: ‘Agree with your comments, keep all points/GD/standings & let top 10 play off when safe to do so.’

“Those are all just facts I am relaying.”

MacAnthony has threatened legal action if the 2019-20 season is declared null and void.
