Peterborough United chairman rejects Fergie criticism of the club's Championship campaign

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony has rejected claims by former Peterborough United manager that a lack of investment was to blame for last season’s relegation.

Ferguson wrote an article for www.coaches.com and said Posh underestimated the challenge of the Championship and weren’t ambitious enough with their investment as a result.

But MacAnthony said on the latest edition of His Hard Truth podcast: “We weren’t good enough full stop last season and that includes Darren and it includes me.

"But blaming a lack of investment is wrong. We spent heavily for a club of our size, but it was soon after Covid and we didn’t have the finances to go out and sign players on £10k a week.

"We might still have gone down and then been saddled with these players in League One on big wages.

"Darren was in on all the recruitment meetings anyway and if he was criticising my co-owners he was also criticising me as we are in it together.

"it was an excellent article, but I didn’t like the bit about investment. I won’t fall out with him over it though.

"I still love the guy and wish him all the best because not doing it at Championship level has become irritating for him and I want him to succeed.

"I met him for the first time since he left us a few weeks back and he’s since offered to do some scouting for us as he’s started watching games again.

"I told him he should have got back in, in June, but he wants to leave it to November, That seems late to me, but he should get the next big League One job to come up.”

Posh spent a million pounds last summer to bring Joel Randall from Exeter City and paid a considerable fee for midfielder Jorge Grant. Posh also spent fees after the season had started on midfielders Ollie Norburn and Jeando Fuchs. They also issued extended contracts to existing players and brought five new players to the club in January.
