Peterborough United chairman on the club's January transfer window, bids for players, interest from Steve Evans and how many new signings fans can expect

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has updated his club’s January transfer window plans.

A new episode of the ‘Hard Truth’ podcast landed on Christmas Eve, one which revealed bids have been made for Posh striker Gustav Lindgren and that former London Road boss Steve Evans has enquired about a couple of Posh players. Evans is now manager of struggling League Two side Bristol Rovers.

Things can change as transfer windows progress, but the current Posh plan revolves around shedding seven or eight players and signing one or two new ones. A couple of Posh targets, one is a winger, are now on the back burner until the summer as their current clubs are going well in their divisions. MacAnthony hinted Colchester United were a potential source for a new signing on one of his recent appearances on Sky Sports.

MacAnthony also revealed first-team boss Luke Williams has been particularly impressed with many of the younger players at the club, as well as a summer signing. Williams called striker Pemi Aderoju into first-team training after his scoring spree on loan at National League South side Eastbourne this season.

"January window talk has already started,” MacAnthony admitted. “We have had bids for players and we are talking about are own targets. As things stand there will be nothing massive from us in January, maybe one or two signings, but we also want to keep our loan signings here. We are capped out and need to shift seven or eight out.

"We will have to do some housekeeping and if someone comes in and buys Archie Collins, and we believe there is a spot free, we will strike while the iron is hot.

"There have been bids for Gustav, but we don’t want to lose him. We are finally seeing why we spent so much money on him. Gustav has been magnificent under this manager. He’s really unlucky as he has the best number nine in Harry Leonard in the league ahead of him.

"The manager has been pleasantly surprised by the standard of young players. He loves Lucca Mendonca, Patryk Sykut and Bolu Shofowoke and he believes David Okagbue is a big talent. We paid Walsall £400k for David and Luke had never seen him play before, but he believes he has the pace, strength and ability to do really well. Okagbue could be like Manny Fernandez and go as far as he wants in the game.

"It’s up to the manager if he wants to bring players back from loan spells. He called me to tell me Pemi had been in and that he loved him. He’s scored about 20 goals for a team who aren’t doing so well, which means that League Two clubs are interested, but we have to make sure he still gets game time. He would probably get it at a top National League side, but a League Two club might see him as a squad player.

“Steve Evans is interested in a couple of our players and if Bristol Rovers back him they could do a Doncaster and surge up the League Two table.”
