Peterborough United boss Robbie Savage proud of his side's character and believes they deserved victory 'without question'

Peterborough United boss Robbie Savage insists his side ‘without question’ deserved to beat Burton Albion at the Weston Homes Stadium on Saturday.

Matt Garbett popped up in the 95th minute to rescue a 2-2 draw against ‘The Brewers’ after Posh fell behind to a Gbemi Arubi’s wonderful strike from halfway in the 89th minute.

Posh has led the game after just two minutes through Owura Edwards but Savage was disappointed to see his side waste a number of good opportunities after that to increase that early lead.

Save said Posh should have been 3-0 up and half-time, but did go on to praise the character of his players who proved to some of their doubters that they are not mentally weak.

Savage said: “Our team were brilliant in spells, especially in the second half with the way we camped them in and worked out the press.

“The biggest thing for me today is the coming from behind. People have called us weak, feeble and fragile, but the players showed today that they are not. They showed great character and desire.

“The game should have been done at 3-0at half-time. Their manager will say they should have won it because Alex Bass makes a big save to stop it going 3-1, but let’s be totally honest, the game should have been dead and buried in our favour long before that.

“Owura made a great start with his goal, but he should have scored again. Harry Leonard has had a shot, we’ve had balls in the box, we had chances and then they’ve scored. How have we not scored in the second half? It’s been the story, at MK, Blackpool, Sheffield Wednesday, but the big thing was I was so proud of the way the players kept going.

“I was feeling so much for my players when Burton scored a worldie. Bass has a good starting position, but it’s a worldie. Liam Kelly has to hit the target for us straight afterwards. We’ve missed numerous chances in the game, but we were still able to pop up with the equaliser.

“It’s still disappointing that we didn’t win the game, that’s the big thing. Our team should have been two or three up at Blackpool, they should have beaten MK, they should be winning today but the difference is the character they have shown to win our first point this season from a losing position. The fact we were in a losing position was undeserved too.

“Both managers will say that they should have won the game. We’ve taken four points from two games and if you reversed it and said a point from Leicester and three today then people would say ‘what a start’. It’s a great start and the boys gave everything and the subs did well.

“It will feel like a loss for them and it feels like a win for us, but we should have won the game. No-one who was here can question that. It would have been an undeserved defeat in front of a brilliant crowd. You can’t question the attitude, application and desire of this team.

“The fans were brilliant and we gave them what they want to see. They want to see their team have a go and they did.

“When you break the game down, they’ve scored a deflected goal from 25 yards and a goal from 55 yards out. We were the better team, no question.”

Posh are back in action on Tuesday night (October 20) when they travel to face Huddersfield Town. The Terriers toppled league leaders Plymouth Argyle with an impressive 2-0 away win on Saturday and sit in third.
