Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson can't wait to get season up and running

Darren Ferguson says he and his Peterborough United players are just 'looking forward to the start' after Friday's announcement of the Sky Bet League One fixtures for the 2020/21 season.

Posh will travel to the Crown Ground to take on Accrington Stanley on the opening day on September 12, before hosting Fleetwood Town on September 19 and then going to Sunderland a week later.

The trip to Stanley will be preceded by two home cup ties, with Posh taking on Cheltenham Town in the Carabao Cup on September 5, and then entertaining Burton Albion in the EFL Trophy, and that pleasing for Ferguson, who admits he finds that the final couple of weeks of pre-season 'drag on'.

Asked for his thoughts on the fixture list, Ferguson said: "We have to play everybody twice, so it is what it is.

"We look at the fixtures, and everybody looks at the start, and then you look at around Easter time and Christmas, but we have to play them all twice.

"We have Accrington first, and we are all looking forward to it.

"Now the fixtures are out you get the butterflies in the stomach, and I am looking at the fixtures after October when hopefully the crowds come back, and we have some good games to end the season.

"We have been waiting for this day for a long time, and now the fixtures are here it seems real and we are all looking forward to the start."

Posh are currently on a training camp at St George's Park, and have two more pre-season friendlies against Colchester United and Coventry City before their cup date with the Robins, which can't come quickly enough for the manager.

"I think these last two weeks before the season starts drag out for me," admitted Ferguson.

"We have had quite a long period together, and I think they just drag out because you want to get started, and I am delighted we have a couple of cup games before league one starts.

"It means we don't have to wait until the 12th, so it all really starts on the 5th.

"But we are all really looking forward to it, it is going to be a long, long season but we are in good condition and we are ready."
