Peterborough United boosted by a return to fitness of key player

Sammie Szmodics could be a surprise starter for Peterborough United against Burton Albion in a League One fixture at the Weston Homes Stadium tomorrow (October 27, 7pm).

Szmodics missed Saturday’s win at Hull City with a slight hamstring problem and was initially rated at 50/50 to return tomorrow. He’s now a 70/30 chance to play after training without a setback over the last two days.

If Szmodics does play he is likely to replace summer signing Ryan Broom with manager Darren Ferguson also mulling over a couple of other changes after a hectic few days on the road.

“Sammie has a better chance of playing than I originally thought,” Ferguson admitted. “He trained Sunday and he trained today so we just need to get one bit of work into him and see if he’s good to go.

“I could freshen the team up a bit more, either formation-wise or personnel-wise, but the players still looked fine this morning and I might just keep them going. We’ve managed them very well between matches so far.

“We need to get through this block of three League One matches and then we can take stock and perhaps make some changes for the FA Cup first round tie and the final Checkatrade Tropy tie. Obviously we want a home tie in tonight’s draw.

“After we play Bristol Rovers next week we have 10 days before the next League One match at Crewe and we must use that time wisely.”
