Wing-back Dan Butler scored twice and Siriki Dembele delivered a high-class goal for what looked suspiciously like the first choice Posh team.

And teenage whizzkid Ricky-Jade Jones claimed both goals for the second team in what proved to be another excellent workout for Darren Ferguson’s squad.

After Mo Eisa saw a goal wiped out for offside Joe Ward and Siriki Dembele sent Nathan Thompson racing into the penalty area in the 29th minute and the new vice-captain unselfishly squared so Butler could convert a tap-in.

And four minutes later Ward was again involved before Dembele showed great skill and composure to score from the edge of the area.

Butler finished off another fine move early in the second half, beating home goalkeeper Deen Gerken with a rising drive from 18 yards after more good work from Ward and Dembele.

Colchester pulled a goal back 15 minutes from time through ex-Posh midfielder Jevani Brown following a goalmouth scramble and not long after Eisa had struck a post from 20 yards.

Jones stole the headlines in the second 90 minutes scoring twice in four minutes.

He opened the scoring on 32 minutes when he tricked his way past his marker before drilling a shot home from the edge of the area.

Jones’ pace was soon taking him behind the home defence to add a second with another clinical finish.

Nial Mason had been denied by a good save before the first goal and at 2-0 Idris Kanu looked to be denied a most blatant penalty.
