UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said yesterday (September 9) he was to rethink plans to allow limited attendances at Football League matches from the beginning of October because the risk of catching the coronavirus has increased in recent weeks.

If, as expected, the stadium ban is extended it could cause huge problems to lower league clubs, many of whom rely on gate money to survive financially.

A planned pilot scheme at Cambridge United’s home League Two fixture with Carlisle on Saturday (September 12) saw the maximum attendance slashed from 2,500 to 1,000 by the UK Government before the host club scrapped it altogether due to problems re-allocating tickets.

Posh had hoped the September 19 game with Fleetwood Town would be the only League One fixture to be played behind closed doors at the Weston Homes Stadium.

Posh are due to host Swindon, Oxford, Burton and Shrewsbury in League One matches in October.
