Peterborough United are ready to match last season’s glorious run of form

Peterborough United skipper Mark Beevers has called on his team to emulate the thrilling run of form from just under 12 months ago.

From January 21 in the 2019-20 season Posh won seven and drew one of nine League One matches to set themselves up for one final push for the Championship.

Sadly a pandemic stopped that run, which included wins against several promotion contenders, in its tracks, but to Beevers it was proof of what can happen when a team hits top form. Ten of that regular starting 11 from last season are still at the club - star man Ivan Toney is the absentee - but Posh head to League One leaders Lincoln City on Saturday horribly short of match practice after seeing their last four scheduled League One matches postponed.

Remarkably Posh were fifth in the League One table when they last played - a 1-1 draw at MK Dons on December 15 - and they remain fifth ahead of this weekend’s game against an Imps side four points clear at the top.

Beever said: “It’s good that we haven’t slipped down the table and we now have games in hand on most teamsa round us. Obviously those games aren’t gimmes, but we know we can get on a run again.

“I felt we’d turned a corner by picking up four points from two matches before we stopped playing. The draw at MK was disappointing, but we worked hard on a bad pitch and probably should have won.

“We’re raring to go again now. It’s alien for me and most of the players to get a month off in the middle of the season, but we’ve had two weeks hard training which is one advantage of not playing matches so we should be ready to go.

“Obviously Lincoln have been flying, but we are confident we can go there and get a result.”
