More Wembley disappointment for ex-Peterborough United pair, and for Stockport County as history repeated itself from 34 years ago to the day

There was more Wembley disappointment for former Peterborough United pair Malik Mothersille and Tayo Edun on Sunday.

Edun started the League One play-off final for Stockport County against Bolton Wanderers, while Mothersille came on as a substitute for the final 10 minutes.

But a power-packed finish from Bolton saw them ease to a 4-1 win with three goals in the last 25 minutes. Mothersille came on at 2-1 and Bolton immediately scored a third goal before the former Chelsea youngster had touched the ball. It was a fourth appearance at Wembley in three seasons for Mothersille.

He was part of two EFL Trophy wins for Posh in 2024 and 2025 and appeared for County in the final of the same competition earlier this year. Edun also played as County lost that game 3-1 to Luton Town. Thirty four years ago to the day County had lost 2-1 to Posh in the Third Division play-off final having lost the Associated Members Cup Final – the EFL Trophy final of the day – to Stoke City eight days earlier. Both of those games were played at Wembley.

Peterborough-based referee Josh Smith was the centre of attention at times today as VAR forced him to disallow a first-half County goal for a foul and then advised him to send off County’s former Bolton defender Josh Dacres-Cogley for the lightest of hair pulls.

Former Posh loanee Kyle Dempsey was an unused Bolton substitute. He’s unlikely to be part of Bolton’s Championship squad. Nor is former Posh forward Josh Randall who is still under contract at ‘The Trotters’ but spent the second half of last season on loan at League One rivals Blackpool.

County will play again in League One next season. The final League One slot will be decided on Monday when Notts County and Salford City contest the League Two play-off final at Wembley (3pm kick off).
