Matt travelled from unlucky villain to superhero as he prepares to play a big part in the Robbie Savage revolution at Peterborough United

Matt Garbett travelled from unlucky villain to superhero in five minutes at the Weston Homes Stadium on Saturday.

The New Zealand international midfielder played a part in Burton Albion’s spectacular late second goal in a thrilling League One encounter. but he picked himself up well enough to grab an equalising goal four minutes into six added minutes at the end of the game.

Garbett celebrated in fine style as Posh maintained their unbeaten record under new manager Robbie Savage with a 2-2 draw.

The 24 year-old, who is on his way back from a four-month absence with hamstring trouble, is still unsure as to whether or not he’s yet fit enough to start, but he wants to become a key member of the Robbie Savage revolution.

“You can see the change in culture and environment under the new manager,” Garbett told BBC Radio Cambs after today’s game. “The fans were brilliant again and the character the lads showed to get a point was great.

"The new gaffer asked me if I was fit enough to start when he got here and I said no because I’m still building myself back to full fitness after having surgery 16 weeks ago. I don’t want a setback, but at the same time I want to be a presence in the squad and to be available to help as much as I can.

"I felt full of confidence today and I was doing well, but I got over confident and lost the ball in midfield. I was just hoping the lad didn’t score, but he hit a wonder goal. I should have released the ball earlier. That was on me, but you don’t lose the ball in central midfield very often and then watch someone score from so far out.

"But I could have sulked, moaned and put my head down, but we all kept going and at the end of the day I cancelled things out by scoring the equaliser. I’m grateful to the players for helping me get out of the c***!

“I did show some good actions before that which helped me lose some of the anxiety from my situation. I feel like I’m getting back to it and I now want to earn the trust from the new manager. I hope to be able to start soon, but I know I have to earn it.

"I hope he plays me and I hope I do well for the team and then everyone wins.”

Garbett damaged his hamstring two days before he was set to make his World Cup Finals debut for New Zealand in the United States in the summer.

"What happened was heartbreaking,” Garbett added. “The injury and the timing of it was just awful. I had forced my way into the starting line-up when the injury struck, but I’ve dealt with a lot of adversity in my career. I hope I have a couple of World Cups in me yet.

“For now I’m going to enjoy myself at Peterborough and the rest will take care of itself. I’m happy to do some of the dirty stuff for the team. We won’t be 3-0 up at half time like at Leicester very often. There will be dogfights along the way and it could be like that at Huddersfield on Tuesday.”

Posh are next in action at third-placed Huddersfield on Tuesday (October 20, 7.4pm kick off).
