LIVE BLOG: Posh vs Northampton

Last updated: Friday, 16 April, 2021, 22:53

  • 3-1 FT
  • Posh move level with Hull at the top, 8 clear of Sunderland in 3rd.
  • Szmodics opens the soring with a clever finish 10 minutes before the break
  • Beevers impedes Jones in the box to let Northampton equalise from the spot just before the break
  • Szmodics flicks over the keeper and scores just after the break
  • Hoskins pushes JCH in the back to concede penalty
  • JCH converts for 30th goal of the season

Posh sat deep to see it out but the job in done and Northampton’s 15-year wait for a win in this fixture goes on. Posh’s superior attacking threat shone through in the end, with a deft flick over the keeper from Szmodics over the keeper and smart play from Thompson to win Posh a penalty making the difference.

Posh now 8 clear in the automatic places and level with top spot. Over to you Hull and Sunderland...

Bursik punches clear. Becoming a standard site.

Northampton corner, right at the death.

Nothing much to report which is probably a good thing, ball stuck in the midfield, a succession of free-kicks. Yellow for Lloyd Jones for dissent after they give away a soft free-kick.

Jones a real asset in this situation to chase everything, forced Horsfall to scuff a clearance out of play when he would have had an easy pass out of the back before.

Posh corner 89 mins

Don’t expect many up.

JCH and Brown removed for Jones and Hamilton. Hamilton coming on sees rather late, could have done with him a long time ago in this game to get some control.

Wave after wave of Northampton pressure. It’s pretty much an 8 at the back, including JCH. they’re holding up so far but not what you’d expect against a team bottom of the league.

Bursik made to work again from the Mills free-kick. It has won after Brown clattered Chuk but the header at goal was weak.

Burrows gives the ball away when well away on the break and Northampton hit straight back and work a chance on the right of the box from Hoskins, which Bursik has to get down and save.

All men back for Posh whenever Northampton come forward. Kent and Beevers being made to work very hard at the back clearing the lines.

Yellow for Rose for a dive. Burrows hangs a leg out just inside but Rose makes well too much of it, there may have been some contact. Maybe the ref gives it if he hasn’t already given two in the game.

Northampton are seeing plenty of the ball but as long as Posh hold firm, this could play into their hands, the space is starting to appear at the back.
