Now if they could find a couple as good as these Posh players from the past that would be lovely.
Here are the best dozen central midfielders I’ve seen play for Posh in my 50 years watching the club. I only included permanent Posh signings.
Let me know who you think should have been included on Twitter at @PTAlanSwann or by email to [email protected].

9. 4th MICK GOODING
Posh years: 1987-1988. Posh appearances: 60. Posh goals: 27. Gooding and Halsall became one of the great Posh midfield partnerships, but sadly only for the 1987-88 campaign as Gooding left early in his second season for Wolves, then of the Third Division, for £85k. The move didn't go down well with Posh fans, but Gooding's outstanding goalscoring record for Posh was always going to attract bigger, better and richer clubs. He was a great finisher as well as a great player who went on to play for Reading (a club he also managed jointly with another ex-Posh star Jimmy Quinn) and Southend. Now runs his own Estate Agency in Reading. Photo: David Lowndes

10. 3rd MICKY GYNN
Posh years: 1978-1983. Posh appearances: 181. Posh goals: 37. A graduate from the Posh youth team who went on to become one of the club's great players before earning an FA Cup winners medal with Coventry City in 1987. Gynn went to St Marks School in Gladstone Street, Peterborough alongside another future Posh midfielder in Trevor Quow. He was a dazzling dribbler of the ball, often at lightning speed, and he scored great goals. Posh sold him, or rather gave him away, to Coventry for £60k and he went on to play over 300 times for the Sky Blues. Gynn also played for Stoke and a handful oif non-league clubs before joining the postal service for whom he still works. Photo: David Lowndes

11. 2nd SIMON DAVIES
Posh years: 1997-1999. Posh appearances: 75. Posh goals: 6. Another Posh Academy graduate who went on to hit the big time with Spurs, Everton, Fulham and Wales. He made his Posh debut aged 17 and it soon became clear Posh had a class act on their books. Davies was sold to Spurs for £700k in December 1999 and he went on to make over 300 top flight appearances for his other three senior clubs as well as win 58 caps for Wales. 12. 1st FREDDIE HILL
Posh years: 1973-1975. Posh appearances: 89. Posh goals: 8. I wasn't very old, but I can still picture Hill strolling through, and dominating, Division Four matches without breaking sweat. He was a 33 year-old when manager Noel Cantwell paid Manchester City £5k for his services and that must rank as the biggest bargain in Posh history. Hill's vision, subtle skills and ability to score direct from free kicks played a big part in the Fourth Division title win of 1973-74. Hill was released in the second half of the following season and played Swedish football for a spell. Hill passed away last year aged 81. Photo: Joe Dent
