The club was hit by a Covid-19 outbreak at the end of last week, with unnamed players testing positive which led to the first team squad being told to self-isolate for 10 days.

EFL protocols ensured that saw the postponement of Saturday’s scheduled home date with Ipswich Town, as well as the Boxing Day trip to Gillingham and the December 29 clash with Charlton Athletic at the Weston Homes Stadium.

All being well, Posh’s next game will be on January 2 when they host Doncaster Rovers, but by then it will mean the team won’t have played a game for 18 days.

The players won’t even be able to return to training until early next week, but Ferguson has reassured fans the team will be ready to hit the ground running on their return.

“The players have a schedule that we have put in place.” said the Posh boss.

“This might not be the worst thing in the world, physically and mentally. It is like a mid-season break.

“But we have to make sure they are ready.

“To be honest, this is probably the way 2020 was going to end for us. It has been a strange time, but this has perhaps come at a good time.

“We have had a busy schedule and as I said this is effectively a mid-season break.

“We just have to make sure we come back raring to go.”
