Or do they? Posh were also written off before pulling off these 10 memorable results in knockout competitions.
We’ve rated them in order of shockability, in reverse order naturally...
5. Notts County 0, Posh 1, FA Cup fourth round, 1981.
A Robbie Cooke (pictured) goal sealed victory for Fourth Division Posh against the team top of Division Two. County went on to win promotion to the Premier League.
6. Posh 1, Nottingham Forest 0, FA Cup third round, 1976.
Brian Clough’s Forest won promotion from Division Two the season after losing to Posh in an FA Cup replay. They won the Division One title the following season and then the European Cup the year after that! Posh survived a siege to draw 0-0 at the City Ground and a Jon Nixon goal was enough to seal a fourth round trip to Old Trafford to tackle Manchester United. 7. Posh 4, Burnley 0, League Cup, fifth round, 1965.
Burnley were top of Division One at the time and this was a quarter final tie, but four second-half goals including two from John Fairbother sealed a famous win in front of almost 15,000. It was the first and only time Posh reached the League Cup semi-finals. Ollie Conmy (pictured) also scored with a Burnley player completing the scoring.
8. Posh 1, Liverpool 0, League Cup fourth round, 1991.
A single strike from Garry Kimble was enough against a Liverpool side managed by Graeme Souness in one of the greatest nights in Posh history. Posh still have a 100% winning record in competitive matches against Liverpool!
