A burst water main caused the recent pitch problems at the Weston Homes Stadium

Peterborough United believe they have identified the cause of the recent London Road pitch problems.

Posh were disappointed in the standard of the playing surface during last weekend’s 4-1 win over Rochdale.

But a water main close to the main stand bursting and causing a leak stemming from a six-inch pipe, led to a build-up of water underneath the playing surface.

An outside contractor has now rectified the problem. Posh stadium manager Dawn Brittain said: “It was an enormous problem. It wasn’t just a case of a small water leak, like from a tap, this was like a fireman’s hydrant in terms of the sheer volume of water it was pumping out.

“This led to the pitch suffering as the water was building up underneath the surface and combined with the wet weather, made the job for our ground staff extremely difficult.”

Posh are back at the Weston Homes Stadium on Saturday (December 19) when League One promotion rivals Ipswich Town are the visitors.
