Blackpool boss backed his side to knock Peterborough United out before they were KO'd themselves!

Blackpool boss Ian Evatt threw in boxing and basketball analogies to explain how his side eventually thrashed Peterborough United in their League One game at Bloomfield Road on Saturday.

‘The Seasiders’ capitalised on some horrible individual errors to overcome a nervy start to win 4-0 and shoot to the top of the table after three games. A second defeat in three games left Posh in 17th place ahead of a home game with winless Stevenage on Tuesday (September 1, 7.45pm kick off).

Blackpool scored twice in each half after Posh had threatened to overrun them in the first 15 minutes.

Evatt told the Blackpool Gazette: “I didn’t like the first half very much - I’ve got to be honest. I didn’t like the way we started the game, I felt there was a bit of a hangover from our defeat on Tuesday. It was our first goal that settled us and showed the importance of set plays.

“I just thought we lost too many duels in the first half, and didn’t play with the fizz that I want us to play with.

“As good as the result was, there’s still loads to improve on. At half time, and it’s always important that I give the players honesty, I told them we needed to up our game, and we did in the second half.

“It was like two boxers with very little guard just throwing punches at each other, and I backed our lads to knock them out before they knocked us out.

“In the second half we did things better. We stopped their fast attacks and didn’t give up as many chances as we did earlier in the game.

“To beat Peterborough you have to be brave and press high to almost make it a basketball game. We did that well at times, but could have done better at other times. This team is still developing and that’s a good place to be given how we have started the season.”

Recent Posh signing Danny Ormerod came on for his debut as a second-half substitute at Blackpool. Ormerod was at Blackpool as a youngster.
