Alan Swann’s guide to the Championship clubs 2021-22. Who’s going up? Who’s going down?
Predicting the final Championship table for the 2021-22 season is fraught with danger because of the financial nightmare for many clubs following the Covid march through the country.

But I’ve had a go...
5. SHEFFIELD UNITED
5th: Sheffield United. Major signings: None. The Blades are sure to come close to a speedy return to the Premiership providing the hangover of an appalling Premier League campaign has disappeared. In Slavisa Jokanovic they have a manager who has succeeded at this level before, but of the three relegated teams I favour this lot the least. They’ll probaby be more expansive under this manager, but his methods could take a while to work.
6th: Cardiff City. Major signings: Mark McGuinness, Ryan Wintle, James Collins. Mick McCarthy’s unique brand of football (strong defence, cautious football, good set-pieces, well-organised, flair treated with suspicion, think England at the Euros) almost carried Cardiff into the play-offs last season and a top half finish should be available this time around. New signing McGuinness scored a winning goal for Posh last season when at Ipswich.
7th: MIllwall. Major signings: Benik Afobe, Dan Ballard, George Saville. The Lions are a proud bunch who defend their own territory viciously. They probably won’t have enough bite to challenge at the top end of the table, but their togetherness will ensure they don’t struggle at the wrong end either. New signing Afobe played in the 2011 League One play-off final for Huddersfield against Posh at Old Trafford.
8th: Birmingham City. Major signings: Chuks Aneke, Tahith Chong, Juan Costillo, Jordan Graham. Inspired to safety by the arrival of Lee Bowyer as manager last season. Don’t expect pretty football at St Andrews, but expect plenty of fight, in the technical area as well as on the pitch. Shopped at Chelsea and Manchester United for Castillo and Chong, but also signed Chuks Aneke whose size is more impressive than his skill level.
