A tribute to three-time Wrexham promotion winner Jacob Mendy from his manager after a move to Peterborough United

Multiple promotion-winning Wrexham boss has paid tribute to Jacob Mendy after the defender made a permanent move to Peterborough United on transfer deadline day.

Mendy turned a loan move to Posh into a permanent switch after Wrexham agreed to cancel the loan of fellow defender Tom O’Connor to London Road. O’Connor picked up a season-ending hamstring injury in a January game against Plymouth.

Mendy has struggled to make an impact at Posh and is currently injured, but he is part of Wrexham folklore after helping them to three promotions from the National League in 2022-23, League Two the following season and then League One last season.

The 29 year-old Gambian international was a free transfer signing from National League side Boreham Wood and made 77 appearances, scoring six goals.

Parkinson told the Wrexham Leader: “I’ve got a lot of time for Jacob. I remember signing him many years ago and just had a Zoom call with him. He was sat on the top of a double-decker bus coming home from the supermarket with his shopping and it just made me chuckle.

“I liked his story of someone who’d come over to the country and fought his way up. I felt his hunger would be a good fit within the group, and it was.

“I’d like to thank Jacob for his contribution. He leaves us with some great moments in his time here.”

O’Connor was also among the 10 Wrexham players who contributed to three successive promotion campaigns.

Parkinson added: “Tom’s back here for treatment so we’ve just got to work with him now and get him fit. It is unfortunate he’s out for the season because he was doing well. A lot of clubs rang me about him and asked him about his situation, but that’s part and parcel of football.”
