Peterborough Sports terrorised by Tyrone in humbling National League North defeat, plus Deeping Rangers and Wisbech Town results

Peterborough Sports suffered a humbling 4-1 defeat at fellow National League North strugglers Bedford Town on Tuesday night.

A dreadful start scuppered Sports who were 3-0 down after 31 minutes. Max Booth pulled a goal back just before the break, but the hosts completed the scoring 15 minutes from time.

Tyrone Marsh scored all four goals for Bedford, two of them from the penalty spot past debutant goalkeeper Harley Price.

The consolation for Sports is they remain just outside the relegation zone, but only by a point as three of the teams below them picked up points. The city side’s position could worsen as they host leaders South Shields at PIMS Park on Saturday (3pm kick off).

Marsh had already forced one save from Price before he raced though to open the scoring in the seventh minute. He made it 2-0 on 14 minutes from the penalty spot after a handball offence by Elliott Whitehouse.

Bedford were breaching the visiting defence at will with Marsh always leading the charge and Price had to react quickly to stop him completing his hat-trick in the opening 20 minutes. He didn’t have to wait too much longer though as a trip by early substitute Aaron Powell meant another spot-kick and another goal for Marsh.

Sports did grow into the game in the minutes before the break and, after Shaquile Coulthirst flicked a shot against a post, Booth struck low and hard into the corner of the net in the fourth minute of added time.

Coulthirst headed a decent chance straight at the goalkeeper in the opening minutes of the second-half, but that was as close as Sports came to a comeback. They weren’t helped by two substitutes being substituted themselves, although that did lead to the welcome return to playing action of former boss Michael Gash.

Marsh completed his fabulous evening with a fourth goal on 76 minutes.

Sports: Price, Willis, Hickingbottom, Oakley, Cadogan (sub Powell, 26 mins, sub Joshua 54 mins, sub Gash 72 mins), Wood, Whitehouse (sub Jarvis, 32 mins), McLintock (sub Felix, 72 mins), Miller, Coulthirst, Booth.

In the United Counties Premier Division Deeping Rangers lost 2-1 at home to Newark & Sherwood Utd in a battle between two bottom six sides on Tuesday. Will Bird scored for Deeping.

In the same division Wisbech Town drew 0-0 at next-to-bottom Harrowby United.

Two teams will be relegated and Deeping and Blackstones are in danger.
