Peterborough Sports are back in the relegation zone after losing to a second-half spot-kick

A second-half penalty condemned Peterborough Sports to a second away defeat in four days.

Sports went down 1-0 at Spennymoor Town to a 65th minute Glen Taylor spot-kick and dropped back into the relegation zone as a result. It was first win in six matches for the hosts who are sixth.

Sports started well and could have gone ahead in the fourth minute as Ben Beresford latched onto a loose pass, but the centre forward blazed over the crossbar.

It was a cagey affair before the break, although there were chances at both ends around the half-hour mark as Sports’ winger Mustapha Carayol saw an effort saved by Bobby Jones, before Mackenzie Heaney’s low strike was well kept out by Sports number one Peter Crook.

Sports felt they had taken the lead six minutes into the second-half, but a sweet strike from Marcel Oakley was ruled out for an offside offence. The same player than headed just wide from a corner.

A long throw that was handled by a Sports defender effectively settled the outcome as Taylor converted the spot-kick and that appeared to knock the stuffing out of Sports as the homes aide were denied additional goals by the woodwork, one more fine save from Crook and a couple of poor finishes.

Sports are next in action at National League North rivals Oxford City in the FA Trophy (Saturday, November 15).
