Mazzarella was due to step up in the summer when current boss Seb Hayes intended to quit.

But Hayes has now told club officials that he would now be unavailable for many of Star’s remaining first-team fixtures so the change has been made earlier than anticipated.

Ian Jackson has also left Star’s management team.

Hayes’ final game in charge in a frustrating season was a 3-0 United Counties Premier Division win over local rivals Yaxley yesterday (March 28). That was just a second win in 14 league games for the city club who are 15th in the table.

Star have also reached the semi-final of the Hinchingbrooke Cup where they will meet Deeping Rangers on Tuesday, April 12..
