NON-LEAGUE: Sports' strikers are red hot, Deeping take point from leaders, Daniels look desperate

Peterborough Sports' hotshot strikers Avelino Vieira and Karl Gibbs took their combined goals tally for the season to 65 yesterday (January 30).

Vieira claimed his third hat-trick of the season and Gibbs scored twice as Sports smashed Buckingham Town 7-0 in a United Counties Division One fixture at PSL.

Viera now has 36 goals in all competitions, seven more than his mate who has played four fewer games. Lewis Webb and Dan Clements also found the target as Sports registered their 21st win in 21 matches and established a 15-point lead at the top of the table.

Bourne are sixth in Division One, but went down 2-1 at Thrapston despite leading at half-time through Tyler Sculthorpe. The home side scored the winning goal seven minutes from time.

And there was an exciting finish at Woodford United where Blackstones were the visitors. Stones looked to have the game sewn up when leading 2-0 through goals from Addie Staffieri and Matt Cook, but the home side scored twice in three minutes to draw level.

But that wasn’t the end of the fun as Scott Ginty promptly fired Stones back in front and Staffieri grabbed his second goal of the match in injury time.

In the Premier Division in-form Deeping Rangers enjoyed a fine 1-1 draw at leaders Leicester Nirvana, but dropped a place to fourth following Newport Pagnell’s 8-0 hammering of bottom club Huntingdon.

Fifth-placed Holbeach United’s fixture at second-placed AFC Kempston was postponed as was Yaxley’s match at Northampton Spencer, while Peterborough Northern Star fought back from an earky two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 with Desborough at Chestnut Avenue.

Danny Barker scored both Star goals. They were level by half-time and felt aggrieved they didn’t find a second-half winner when Jacob Joyce’s 25-yarder hit post and bar before rolling to safety.

Wisbech moved into the top half of the table after an excellent first-half display at Kirby Muxloe.

Goals from Scott Johnson, Billy Smith and Michael Frew saw the Fenmen 3-0 up by the break and that’s how it finished.

Stamford AFC’s battle against relegation from the EVO Stik Premier Division took another big blow as rivals Colwyn Bay left the Zeeco Stadium with a 3-2 win.

The Daniels were 3-0 down before ralling late on with goals from Paul Malone and Tom McGowan.

Stamford are next-to-bottom in the table and staring the drop in the face.

And Spalding United’s play-off hopes were almost badly damaged as they conceded two goals in the opening 20 minutes at next-to-bottom Loughborough Dynamo.

Thankfully second-half strikes from Ash Jackson and Jamie Graham salvaged a point for the seventh-placed Tulips. Jackson scored with a long-range screamer.
