Sports, the runaway leaders of United Counties Division One, beat highly-rated Eastern Counties Premier Division side Godmanchester Rovers 2-1 in the quarter-finals of the Hinchingbrooke Cup at PSL.

It’s a 24th win in a row in all competitions for the all-conquering city side who now go on to tackle top flight UCL side Yaxley in the semi-finals. It’s not a game the Cuckoos will probably relish.

Sports enjoyed the perfect start last night as Ollie Medwynter headed in Jordan Macleod’s free kick after just 90 seconds.

And it was 2-0 on 24 minutes as Avelino Vieira latched onto a classy MacLeod pass before slotting home past visiting ‘keeper Evan Jeckells.

Sports could have been further ahead by the time Godmanchester pulled a goal back 15 minutes from time through a James Hall penalty following a harsh decision to penalise Medwynter for handball. Karl Gibbs planted a good headed chance wide and Macleod struck the bar with a dipping, curling effort from 30 yards.

The penalty conversion turned out to be Godmanchester’s one shot on target all night and Sports should have wrapped the game up deep into injury time when substitute Harry Brundle took too long to get a shot away and was tackled.
