Netherton United win a County Cup, Thorpe Wood Rangers get their chance on Friday, plus other local cup finals on the horizon

Netherton United have completed a promotion and County Cup win double.

The city side, who had already clinched promotion from Peterborough League Division One, beat Northants Combination Division One outfit Rushden FC 2-0 in the final of the Northants Lower Junior Cup at Wellingborough Whitworth FC on Wednesday night.

Netherton dominated the first-half and deservedly took the lead just past the half hour mark when goal machine Kyial West converted a cross from Charlie Pywell from close range.

The second-half was more even, but Netherton finished strongly and spurned a couple of decent chances before Pywell broke clear after a Rushden long throw into the penalty. The opposition goalkeeper had gone forward for the set-piece leaving teenager Pywell to outstrip a couple of defenders before tapping into an empty net.

Pywell was surprisingly overlooked for man-of-the-match in favour of West who had bagged his 47th goal of an exceptional personal season.

Netherton can still claim a hat-trick of notable successes as they tackle Division One rivals Whaplode Drove Rovers in the final of the Peterborough League’s Challenge Cup at Deeping Rangers FC on Friday, May 3. Whaplode could field former Ipswich Town, Bolton Wanderers and Peterborough United midfielder David Norris in that game.

The Junior Cup Final between Division Three rivals Stanground Cardea Sports Reserves and South Lincs Swifts takes place at the same venue this Friday (April 25, 7.30pm kick off).

Division Four champions Thorpe Wood Rangers tackle Northants Combination Division Three champions Daventry Town FC Hobbs in the final of the Northants Area Cup at Rushden & Higham United FC, also on Friday.

The Junior Alliance League Cup Finals take place this weekend at the ‘Field of Dreams’, the Stonald Road home of Whittlesey Juniors FC.

There are four finals at the venue on Saturday and five on Sunday.
