Peterborough United were beaten by Rushden & Diamonds on penalties in the Maunsell Cup Final at the Dog & Duck ground in Wellingborough last night (July 21).

The match finished 2-2 before Aaron Williams and Glen Ferrier missed spot-kicks in a shoot-out that was won 4-2 by the Diamonds.

Williams had headed Posh in front in the first-half from a fine cross from 16-year-old Lewis Freestone.

Freestone then scored a second-half equaliser after Diamonds had surged into a 2-1 lead with a terrific strike from the edge of the area.

Posh dominated the game for long periods, but couldn’t find a decisive third goal. Williams and Joe Gormley both went close, while Matty Stevens saw a ‘goal’ harshly disallowed for offisde.

Transfer-listed former skipper Jack Payne was taken off injured in the early stages.
