LATEST NEWS: Darragh backs McCann to be a roaring success

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has backed manager Grant McCann to be a roaring success at the ABAX Stadium.

Posh fans have been down in the doldrums following last night’s (February 21) emphatic 4-1 defeat by League One play-off rivals Southend.

That loss, a third in the last four home games, left Posh in ninth place in League One, five points off a play-off place.

Some supporters have been questioning MacAnthony on Twitter today about McCann’s ability and the general form of the team.

And the Posh chairman, who is on his way home from a family holiday, has been busy defending his manager.

MacAnthony tweeted: “There is no-one I’d rather have managing our club in the long term. He is already succeeding in his first managerial role and he has the cajones to get even better.

“Grant will get all the time he needs as he’s rebuilding the club from top to bottom and his progress has been a delight to watch most of the time.

“We were the fifth/sixth best side up until Boxing Day so it’s in our players and we need to get it out of them again.

“Our fans need to appreciate what Grant is trying to build here.

“Ninth in League One is where we are, it’s not where me or Grant want to be, or where we want to finish. He is a born winner.

“We won’t get promoted unless our home form changes. That’s a serious truth, but we’ve been dealing with injuries, suspensions, personal things and games every three days or so, so it’s been tough to field a settled side.

“We weren’t superb or awful against Southend until they scored in the 45th minute, but then we folded. The players need to respond better.”
