FOOTBALL: Stanground cause shock, Ketton are full of smart goal-scoring Alexs

AFC Stanground are the surprise package in the Peterborough League President's Shield semi-finals.

The city side are eight places and 20 points worse off than Holbeach United Reserves in the Premier Division, but the formbook went out of the window in a quarter-final tie between the sides at Yaxley FC on Saturday (January 16).

Josh Staggs, Liam Whaley and Kurtis Adams-Webb scored the goals for Stanground. Even a late sending-off for two yellow cards for Stanground substitute Klodjan Memaj couldn’t affect the outcome.

Stanground will now host the powerful Pinchbeck United side in the semi-finals. The other last four tie will see unbeaten Premier Division leaders Moulton Harrox entertain the winners of the Whittlesey Athletic/Netherton United clash. That latter game was postponed at the weekend so the teams will try again at The Grange on Wednesday, January 27.

Harrox were held 0-0 in the first half of their quarter final tie by improving Uppingham, but second-half strikes from Ben Allen, Billy King and Olly Maltby eased Harrox through.

Pinchbeck were 3-0 up at the break in their tie against Thorney before running out 5-2 winners. Five different players found their way onto the scoresheet as player-manager Ian Dunn, Lawrence Lambley, Ashley Murrell, Bradley Murrell and Tyler Wright were all on target.

In the Premier Division Ketton stretched their unbeaten run to 10 games with a convincing 5-2 success over bottom club Riverside at Pit Lane.
