David Oldfield was full of praise for Peterborough Sports and the former Posh coach made ‘Little’ Jimmy Dean’s day

City manager, former Posh coach David Oldfield, called Sports ‘a great club with great characters’ after his side’s 2-0 fifth round win at Court Place Farm.

And Sports boss Jimmy Dean described Oldfield as a ‘real gentleman’ for his actions after the match.

“I’d heard David was a great bloke from Lewis Webb (Sports’ coach) and Dan Lawlor (Sports’ former Posh player) who had both worked with him,” Dean said.

“And he was great afterwards. He came up to me after the game and when I jokingly told him he’d made my son Jimmy Junior cry, he nearly welled up himself before taking Jimmy onto the pitch to join in some shooting drills with some Oxford players.

“It was a great gesture and one he didn’t have to make. Little Jimmy has grown up with Sports and he gets really into the games. David made his day.

“David was also very complimentary about the team which was nice to hear. He came across as a very genuine man and I have total respect for him and his club.”

Oldfield has steered Oxford into a play-off place in the National League South - a division above Sports - as well as the quarter-finals of the FA Trophy for the first time in the club’s history and he was impressed with the ability and commitment of Dean’s men.

“We were under no illusions before the game about how hard this tie would be,” Oldfield said.

“And so it proved. Peterborough Sports were fantastic. They made the game really difficult for us and we had to defend well to get through.

“Our football didn’t flow as much as we would have liked, but we were resolute and well organised.

“Sports are a terrific football club who are progressing very quickly.

“They have strong characters at the club and they have some excellent players.

“They had a gameplan and they executed it well. I wish them all the best going forward.”

Posh loanee Sam Cartwright sat on the bench as an unused substitute for Oxford, but former London Road winger Alfie Potter played well for the home side.
