20 YEARS OF BARRY FRY: The best and worst transfer deals

David Farrell celebrates his play-off semi-final hat-trick against Barnet.

In this week's final instalment of Barry Fry's 20 years at Peterborough, the club's director of football reveals some of his favourite memories.

FAVOURITE MATCH

“Winning 9-1 away at Barnet.

To go back to my old club and win by such a scoreline was fantastic.

“Every time we shot we seemed to score. We even scored all 10 goals as Mick Bodley put through his own net for their goal.

“I had some good friends at Barnet still, including manager John Still, but that was the game I enjoyed the most.”

BEST INDIVIDUAL DISPLAY

“David Farrell’s hat-trick at London Road in the play-off semi-final against Barnet is the greatest hat-trick I have ever seen.”

BEST SIGNING

“I picked up Jimmy Bullard for nothing from West Ham. What a class act he was.”

FAVOURITE TRANSFER DEAL

“Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan was tough to deal with, but he sold me Leon McKenzie for £25k which I paid at £1k a month. We eventually received £775k from Norwich for Leon.”

WORST TRANSFER DEAL

“Jimmy Bullard was sold to Wigan for £225k and no add-ons. I was excluded from the deal which cost the club millions.”

BEST PLAYERS

“Matthew Etherington and Simon Davies were the best young players I’d seen at the time.

“Davies went on to make us £2.2 million in transfer fees and add-ons. Etherington went on to make us £1.6million.”
