“Virtually every club supported our decision to cancel the formal 2020 season and this will now occur.

“We will be communicating again, hopefully very shortly, with all 32 clubs once we understand the projected position with the ECB’s roadmap in the light of the PM’s ‘vector of disease’ comment.

“We still hope to facilitate some cricket when we get the green light.”

On Tuesday (June 23(, Prime Minister Boris Johnson refused to allow recreational cricket to start up again on the day he did allow pubs, restauarants and cinemas to open saying a cricket ball was a ‘natural vector of disease’.

There will also be no competitive tennis in the Hunts & Peterborough Leagues in 2020.

The news local players feared arrived this week, although the league will consider holding an invitational event in August and September if the coronavirus crisis is over.

League secretary Geoff Smith said: “We consulted all 19 of our member clubs and it was soon obvious we had no choice but to cancel the season.”

The mixed competitions which start in May had already been called off and now the mens and ladies events which traditionally start in July have followed suit.
