Yellow alert for thunderstoms in Peterborough for next few days

The Met Office has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms covering the Peterborough region through to Monday.

The warning follows heavy rain on Thursday which saw flash flooding in many parts of Peterborough.

The Met Office is forecasting temperatures of 21-24C over the weekend and into Monday with more rain forecast through Saturday and into Sunday with heaviest showers likely into Monday morning.

The Met Office also warned that the exact locations are unpredictable.

The warning states: “Further heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected at times and may lead to some flooding or travel disruption.

“The hot and humid airmass across the southern half of the UK will help to develop some further heavy showers and thunderstorms on Saturday afternoon and evening.

“Many areas may well miss the thunderstorms, but where they occur 20-30mm is possible in an hour and up to 40mm in 2 to 3 hours.

Lightning and hail are also potential hazards.

“These storms could well be slow moving, giving large rainfall totals where these occur.

“Areas of heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop on Sunday, with some persisting into the late evening.

“A similar day on Monday, though the thunderstorms more likely to clear earlier in the evening. Many areas within the warning area will miss the thunderstorms altogether, but where they occur , the heavy rain (15-25mm) is expected in an hour, and as much as 40mm in 2 or 3 hours.”

Trev Robbins Pratt, from the respected Peterborough Weather Watch website said there had been a huge amount of rain falling on Thursday (August 13): “It was the first rain I have recorded in 16 days, with a ‘huge’ total of 33.0mm, with it being likely there is some more to come. The August average is around 62.0mm, so over half of that has fallen just in that day.

“Temperature wise, August average maximum to this point in the month is around 22.8°C, but up to August 12, the average maximum with me is a very high 26.2°C.

“The very high temperatures have certainly left us, but still have potential to reach 25°C, but the next few days after we do look set to fall back to around the average for mid August. Just a hint that it might heat up again later next week, but that is a long way off of course.”
