A mother duck and her 13 tiny babies had a PCSO escort from Spalding town centre to the safety of the River Welland.

PCSOs Lisa Waterfall and Dave Walker spotted the mum and ducklings outside the Pied Calf pub in Sheep Market, at lunchtime today (Wednesday).

Working together, the PCSO’s shepherded their newly acquired feathered friends round the corner into The Crescent and along Abbey Path before rejoining The Crescent and walking along Vine Street to cross London Road to reach the river.

The PCSOs stopped passing traffic two or three times as the duck and ducklings waddled along without showing too much road sense – and drivers seemed only too happy to pull up to give the ducks the right of way.

Once on the riverside, mum and babies leapt into the water and paddled off together.

The PCSOs and one or two members of the public who followed were all smiling broadly once it was mission accomplished.

Dave told us: “Nobody can say that we don’t serve all members of our community.”
